Whey is not the problem. Depending on it for everything is.
Drew Campbell, CISSN, President & Co-Founder, NiHTEK®
Quick answer: Whey, MPC and MPI still work and are not going away, but building an entire protein portfolio on one dairy supply system is a growing commercial risk, since price swings, availability and margin pressure move through every SKU at once when that system tightens. Diversification does not mean replacing dairy. It means adding a credible non dairy platform like NiHPRO®Gold alongside whey, MPC and MPI, so a brand can keep launching and protect margin regardless of what happens in one market.
Protein Is Not a Sports Nutrition Product Any More
Whey built a large part of this industry, and a fair part of my own career along with it. It works, the science behind it is solid, and consumers trust it. Milk protein concentrate and milk protein isolate earn their place too, in the right formula, for the right product. None of that has stopped being true. What has changed is everything around them. Twenty years ago I could tell you exactly who was buying protein. Gym members, athletes, a handful of serious home trainers. That is no longer the category. Protein now sits in weight management, GLP-1 support, women’s wellness, active ageing, gut conscious eating, meal support, snacks and everyday drinks. The person buying it might be a 52 year old woman working on her body composition, or someone eating half of what they used to because of a medication. That expansion is good news. It has also exposed something the old playbook never had to deal with. Most brands are still drawing from one broad supply system, and the entire launch calendar assumes it will be there next year at a price that works. The brands I have the most respect for are not asking what replaces whey. They are asking a harder question. What does our protein portfolio need to look like so we can keep launching, keep our margin and keep serving people, whatever one market decides to do? That is what a protein diversification strategy actually means. Not a swap. A structure.
Dairy Still Works. Depending on It Entirely Does Not.
NiHTEK® is not an anti dairy company, and I have no interest in becoming one. Whey will keep mattering. MPC and MPI are genuinely useful tools when the product, the consumer and the commercial model line up. The risk starts somewhere else. It starts when nearly every SKU, every launch plan and every margin assumption traces back to the same family of inputs. When that happens, a brand tends to feel it in the same places:
- Ingredient price swings that arrive faster than you can reprice
- Spot availability tightening at the worst possible moment
- Margin quietly compressing across the whole range at once
- Reformulation pressure on products that were working fine
- Less money for promotion, sampling and creators, because the base is eating it
- Launches pushed back because the supply is not there
For a young brand, that kind of pressure can stall growth for a year. For an established one it can take an entire innovation pipeline off the road. Diversifying is not a rejection of dairy. It is how you protect the part of the business that already works while you build somewhere else to grow.
Moving From Whey to MPC or MPI Is Not Diversification
When whey gets expensive or hard to secure, MPC and MPI are the obvious next call. They keep the dairy story, they bring creaminess, and they behave well in a lot of formulations. I understand why brands go there. But they are still inside the dairy system. Same milk supply, same processing capacity, same regional economics, and demand from food and beverage categories that have nothing to do with sports nutrition. If a large part of the industry moves the same way at the same time, this year’s workaround becomes next year’s pressure point. We have watched it happen. That does not make MPC or MPI poor choices. It just means they are not, on their own, a diversification strategy. The stronger position is dairy plus: whey where it earns its place, MPC or MPI where they genuinely fit, and a credible premium non dairy platform built alongside them rather than instead of them.
Why We Built NiHPRO®Gold
For years, choosing a non dairy protein meant accepting a trade. You got the label you wanted and gave up ground on taste, aroma, mouthfeel, mixability or how it sat in the stomach. Everyone in the industry knew it. Most of us worked around it. Consumers stopped accepting that. They care about protein quality, but they also care about how a shake tastes at seven in the morning, whether it mixes without a fight, how they feel two hours later and whether they want to pick it up again tomorrow. NiHPRO®Gold was built for that reality. It is a premium non dairy hydrolyzed protein isolate platform for advanced ready to mix powders, ready to drink beverages and functional nutrition products where repeat use is the whole business model. Its job is not to add another number to the nutrition panel. It is to give the formulator a better starting point on taste, texture, dispersion, flavour carry, digestive comfort and daily usability. We tell every partner the same thing: an ingredient does not rescue a poor formula. Flavour systems, sweeteners, processing conditions and texture all still have to be done properly. NiHPRO®Gold is not a shortcut around that work. It is a better platform to do it on.
The Third Category of Protein
The industry has spent years framing this as a two way choice. Dairy or plant. Whey or vegan. Performance or lifestyle. That framing is too small, and it stopped describing the market a while ago. NiHPRO® is not traditional dairy and it is not commodity plant protein. It is a re engineered platform, built through ingredient selection, controlled hydrolysis, amino acid optimisation, sensory work and a lot of application testing. That is what we mean by the third category of protein. The value of a protein is not settled by where it starts. It is settled by its nutritional quality, how it has been processed, how it behaves in a finished product and how someone experiences it over months of daily use. That reframing gives brands a conversation to have with consumers that is not the tired dairy versus plant argument. It becomes the right protein for the right person in the right application.
Where the Demand Is Actually Going
Three areas are raising the bar on protein faster than anything else I am seeing. GLP-1 nutrition. People on these therapies are eating less while still needing enough high quality protein, alongside resistance training, to hold onto lean mass. The products that win here will be easy to get down when appetite is low. Anything heavy, chalky or hard to finish will lose, no matter what the front of the pack promises. Women’s wellness and body composition. More women are coming to protein through strength, satiety, healthy ageing and how they want to feel day to day. It is a much wider audience than traditional sports nutrition, and it responds badly to aggressive gym products repackaged in softer colours. They can tell. Gut conscious nutrition. People link digestion to energy, comfort and confidence now, and protein is something they take every single day. Tolerance and sensory experience are not secondary benefits in that context. They are the reason someone is still using the product in month six.
NiHPRO®Gold is relevant across all three because it gives brands a premium non dairy base for lighter, more inclusive daily use concepts. Within the wider family, NiHPRO®Core carries FODMAP Friendly certification, which gives a specific and substantiated option for gut conscious applications where that matters.
Taste Is a Commercial Decision, Not a Technical One
A protein product can hit every specification on the sheet and still fail. If the drink is gritty, heavy or foamy, someone buys it once. They do not build a habit around it, they do not recommend it, and they do not come back. So sensory quality is not a lab detail. It runs straight through repeat purchase, reviews, word of mouth and lifetime value. NiHPRO®Gold came out of years of development, application testing and blunt feedback from partners, and it was designed to help formulators get to a cleaner flavour base, smoother mouthfeel, better dispersion, controlled foam and a lighter finish. Those things matter in premium RTM and RTD. They matter even more on the second purchase.
What a Better Protein Base Frees Up
Ingredient strategy and marketing strategy are the same conversation, and a lot of brands treat them as separate. When an expensive base absorbs too much of the product economics, there is less room for sampling, retail support, creator partnerships and consumer education. The product might be excellent and nobody hears about it. A well built diversification strategy gives some of that room back. It also gives the brand something to talk about, which a silent commodity substitution never does. A third category of protein. A premium non dairy experience. Amino acid quality that stands up. Real digestive and sensory considerations. New applications across wellness and performance. Support through the NiHPRO® Inside platform. That is a different commercial proposition, not just a different ingredient.
This Is Already Happening
Protein diversification is not a theory waiting for the industry to catch up. As of 12 September 2026, NiHPRO® is represented across 38 brands in 17 markets and six continents. Thirty five TLAs are signed, three more are issued and awaiting signature, and 16 consumer brands are already in market with products powered by NiHPRO®. Some of those partners are at the very start. Others are reordering, scaling and building case studies we can point to. The useful thing to notice is that none of them waited for the old assumptions about protein to break before they started building something else.
Diversify Before You Have To
The future of protein is not dairy against non dairy, and it is not tradition against innovation. It belongs to brands that can combine proven ingredients with new platforms, protect their supply, serve a much wider consumer base and make products people actually want to keep using. Whey will stay important. MPC and MPI will stay useful. But a dairy only strategy is no longer the only credible path, and in a few categories it is no longer the safest one. The better question for any brand right now is what protein architecture gives us the best chance to grow, differentiate and stay standing over the next decade.
For a growing number of brands, NiHPRO®Gold is part of that answer. If you are working through your own protein strategy, talk to us about NiHPRO®Gold and the NiHPRO®Inside platform. Protein For EveryBODY™ · Forged by Nature. Backed by Science.™
Frequently Asked Questions
Should brands stop using whey protein?
No. Whey is a valuable, well trusted protein and it is not going anywhere. Diversification is about reducing over reliance on a single supply system, not walking away from an ingredient that already works.
Are MPC and MPI genuine alternatives to whey?
They can be useful in specific products, but they are still dairy proteins drawing on the same underlying milk supply. They widen the formulation toolkit without actually diversifying the supply base underneath it.
What makes NiHPRO®Gold different from commodity plant protein?
NiHPRO®Gold is a premium non dairy hydrolyzed protein isolate platform built around transformation, amino acid quality, sensory performance, formulation functionality and daily usability. That is a fundamentally different proposition to a commodity protein sold on price per kilo.
Does NiHPRO®Gold replace whey?
No, and it does not need to. It sits alongside whey, MPC and MPI as part of a broader dairy plus portfolio rather than competing to replace any of them outright.
Is NiHPRO®Gold FODMAP Friendly certified?
No. FODMAP Friendly certification applies specifically to NiHPRO®Core. Any claim made publicly must follow the approved product and market documentation for the specific product in question.
Where can brands actually use NiHPRO®Gold?
In premium ready to mix powders, ready to drink beverages and functional nutrition concepts across performance, daily wellness and body composition, subject to final formulation and local regulatory review.
