After 30 Years, It Takes a Lot to Surprise Me
I started using protein when I was 12 years old. Since then I have worked with it as a consumer, retailer, brand builder, educator and founder. I have watched products improve, markets change, supply chains tighten and marketing language become louder. After more than three decades, it takes a lot for a protein ingredient to genuinely surprise me.
NiHPRO®Gold has done that.
I do not say this because it is our newest ingredient or because I am expected to promote it. I say it because I know what sits behind the finished powder: years of work across the NiHPRO® platform, thousands of taste tests and sensory evaluations, repeated formulation changes, difficult samples, close calls, customer conversations and the decision to keep going when “good enough” would have been easier.
Core proved the platform. Gold shows how far the platform can go.
NiHPRO®Gold Did Not Begin With a Launch Calendar
At NiHTEK®, we try to begin with a problem rather than a date. The problem was clear. The nutrition industry wanted a premium non-dairy protein that could deliver strong amino-acid quality and broad consumer suitability, but brands still struggled with the same practical barriers: bitterness, aroma, thinness, grittiness, foam, difficult flavour systems and the heavy feeling that can make people stop using a product.
NiHPRO®Core moved the category forward and remains an important commercial platform. It proved that a hydrolysed, amino-acid-optimised and allergen-conscious protein system could perform across real products and real markets. It also taught us where the next level had to be.
Gold is the result of those lessons. It is further hydrolysed than Core and was developed with a stronger focus on premium ready-to-mix (RTM) powders and ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages. The goal was not to make Core obsolete. The goal was to take everything Core taught us and push sensory performance, solubility, aroma, mouthfeel and application flexibility further.
The Work People Never See
Most people see a finished shake. They do not see the coded cups on a table. They do not hear a team debate whether one sample is slightly creamier, whether the vanilla carries more naturally, whether the finish is cleaner or whether the foam settles quickly enough. They do not see the samples that were almost right and still rejected.
Across the NiHPRO® development journey, we have completed literally thousands of taste tests and sensory evaluations. Some were formal. Others happened in offices, laboratories, gyms, trade shows, hotel rooms and customer meetings. That sounds excessive until you understand that a small sensory difference can decide whether a consumer finishes the first tub and buys the second.
Protein quality on paper matters. So does what happens after the scoop leaves the tub.
- Taste and aftertaste determine how aggressively a brand must mask the protein.
- Mouthfeel determines whether a product feels premium or merely functional.
- Solubility and foam affect preparation, manufacturing and the experience in the shaker.
- Aroma and colour shape expectations before the first sip.
- Digestive comfort affects whether the habit survives beyond the launch campaign.
The Early Reaction Has Been Unusually Strong
The feedback we are receiving from customers and formulators has been among the strongest we have seen during the NiHPRO® journey. The surprise is often visible before the discussion begins. People expect a familiar non-dairy compromise. Instead, they experience a smoother, cleaner and more premium base than they anticipated.
The themes have been consistent: improved flavour carry, a softer aroma, a more dairy-like creaminess without dairy, strong mixability and a finish that gives formulators more room to create. In premium ready-to-mix powders, this can reduce the amount of sensory repair required. In beverages, it gives development teams a more advanced starting point, although every final RTD still needs proper stability and processing validation.
We will publish customer comments only where we have permission and documented wording. I do not want to manufacture testimonials. The real feedback is powerful enough without embellishment.
Why This Is a Proud Moment
Founders often talk about pride when something launches. For me, pride comes from knowing what the team refused to accept. NiHPRO®Gold represents science, persistence and care coming together. It reflects the precision of Dr. Seiji Aoyagi, the research discipline of Dr. Johan Thuvander, the practical performance perspective of Dr. Reid Reale, the work of our formulation and manufacturing teams, and the honest feedback of customers across very different markets.
It also reflects a belief I have carried for most of my life: the nutrition industry can create products that perform without asking consumers to tolerate a poor experience.
What NiHPRO®Gold Means for the Future of NiHTEK®
NiHPRO®Gold is not the end of the work. It is proof that the platform can continue to evolve. Core remains our scalable flagship for powders and broad applications. Puffs extend the platform into high-protein snacks. Gold gives brands a premium expression for advanced powder and beverage development.
Together, they support the larger idea behind NiHTEK®: we do not want to copy an existing category and change the label. We want to create branded ingredient systems that make a manufacturer’s job easier and give the consumer a noticeably better product.
After 30 years in sports nutrition, I am still difficult to impress. That is probably a good thing. It means that when I say NiHPRO®Gold has exceeded my expectations, I understand exactly how much work was required to earn that reaction.
NiHPRO®Gold is not a rejection of what came before it. It is what years of learning look like when a team is willing to keep improving.
